To Become a Great Leader You Must Know Yourself

I feel you must know yourself to become a great leader.

A great leader is an ultimate expert of themselves.

They are not afraid to face their true selves: the pretty, the ugly, the curves, the edges…

Great leaders are also true to themselves.

They inspired us with their authenticity, passion, determination, selflessness and persistence.

Well how do you start to know yourself?

Ask yourself some of these questions and write your responses down in a journal.

Reflect on what qualities set you apart and this will help you become a great leader:

  • Who am I?
  • What do I believe in?
  • What makes me angry?
  • What makes me sad?
  • What makes me happy?
  • What feels right?
  • What feels wrong?
  • What are my values?
  • What do I want to change?
  • What do I want to fight for?
  • What brings me joy?
  • What makes me jump out of bed?
  • What makes me want to stay in bed?
  • What is my mission?
  • What value do I bring to the table?
  • What could I do to change the world?
  • What is my purpose?
  • What do I do better than others?
  • What could others help me with?
  • What are my boundaries?
  • What are my strengths?
  • What are my weaknesses?
  • What could I do better?
  • Who are my supporters?
  • Who are my haters?
  • What would I do if I know I would never fail?
  • What do I want to become?
  • What kind of life do I want?
  • What is my vision?

Knowing yourself is the starting point of your Why.

This is the foundation to develop your skills and knowledge to pursue your passion.

All great leaders started by being leaders of their own lives.

In the midst of your adrenaline-addicted pace of doing…

Have you stopped to consider who you want to be as a leader?

I know that thinking may make you feel unproductive.

Sometimes it doesn’t feel like you are getting anything done.

But the kind of leader you want to be is one of the most important areas to reflect on…

This will set the tone for your future successes.

This is a significant because the truth is that leadership is not about managing things.

Leave that to the managers…

Leadership is about influencing people.

And to influence people you have to form relationships with them.

To successfully form relationships.

To successfully form relationships.

You have to be true to who you are in your leadership.

Have you ever known someone who “does” leadership…

You will understand the difference.

And those relationships are the engine that empowers your ability to lead others.

Even if you have been a leader for a long time.

You should still revisit the kind of leader you want to be.

Since leadership is an ongoing journey and there are always adjustments to be made along the way…

So settle in and pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea…

Close the door and ask yourself these questions to help understand what kind of leader you want to be.

Remember that writing your answers down will help to solidify any forward action you will be taken:

  • What qualities do I aspire to exemplify in my leadership?
  • What makes them important to me?
  • What makes them important to others?
  • When I move on to whatever is next, what do I want to leave behind?
  • How will people remember me as a human being and leader?
  • What will it take for me to truly stand out as a leader?
  • What actions will I commit to in moving my leadership to the next level?
  • What is the first step I can take to be the leader I want to be?
  • Who can help me?
  • What other questions need to be asked to help me to be the kind of leader I want to be?

That last one is a trick question…

But I really want to know what you would ask!

If you are driven to be a better leader…

You won’t let these questions rest.

Personally, I would like to have integrity as a leader.

If a leader doesn’t have integrity…

Then his followers cannot possibly take him seriously.

I would also like to bring the best out of my followers.

I’m good at identifying the strengths of my teammates and their potential.

I believe this ability will help me to effectively utilize the skills of the whole team.

An effective leader also never stops learning.

This is why it is important that you adopt some great qualities of people you come across.

Also, I would like to be a leader who is approachable, friendly and who makes other people’s job easier.

Even better yet, I would like to be a charismatic leader.

Someone who is not only respected but also liked by their followers.

While it is not necessary to have charisma in order to be effective.

It can really make a difference plus it doesn’t hurt to be liked while you get things done.

This is what separates the good from the great…

This is why some become truly memorable leaders while others are hardly remembered in history.

In order to be a charismatic leader…

You need to have LIKEABILITY as a characteristic.

Respect cannot be gained through forcing others to follow you.

You have to earn it by being likeable and inspiring your followers.

A great leader also makes his followers feel good about themselves.

Their views should be appreciated and respected.

You have to be genuinely interested in other people.

If you do that, then your followers will gladly like to be a part of your team.

They will be happily go to end of the world with you.

So move forward!

Find someone to support you.

Create an action plan and practice demonstrating and refining your new behaviors in your leadership and your life.

Don’t stop learning and getting better!

There is always more to do in becoming the kind of leader you want to be.
